European Directive 2003/10/EEC became national law in February 2006. Under the new legislation hearing protection must be made available where the sound levels are at or above 80 decibels (dB), and strictly enforced where the sound levels reach or exceed 85 dB. Simplified Noise Reduction (SNR) is the amount of decibel noise reduction that each pair of ear muffs or ear plugs can offer. For example, if the environment noise level is 80dB, a pair of ear plugs with an SNR of 31dB will reduce the noise levels to the ear to 49dB.
